Chemical Elements

Chemical elements are the fundamental substances that constitute all matter in the universe. Each element is made up of atoms that have the same number of protons in their nucleus, giving them unique chemical properties. There are currently 118 known elements, ranging from hydrogen, the lightest element, to oganesson, the heaviest element. The elements are organized in the periodic table, a chart that arranges them by their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties. The periodic table is divided into groups and periods, with elements in the same group sharing similar characteristics and properties. Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids based on their physical and chemical properties. The study of chemical elements is essential to understanding the composition and behavior of matter in the natural world and is a cornerstone of chemistry and other scientific disciplines.
