Why can glass almost disappear in oil?
If a glass object and its surrounding oil have closely matched refractive indices, light changes direction very little at their boundary. That removes an important visual clue to the glass's outline.

How it works
Transparent glass can be easy to see. One reason is that light changes direction as it passes between air and glass, altering the view through it. Some light also reflects from the boundary. Transparency does not mean that light travels through an object unchanged.
Look closer
The Exploratorium demonstrates the difference with a glass rod placed in a suitable oil. If the glass and liquid have closely matched refractive indices, the boundary becomes much harder to see. The match is not perfect for every glass or oil, so a faint outline can remain. This reveals what the eye was using as a clue: the change in light's behavior at the boundary, rather than the mere presence of solid material.
