How it works

A metal spoon left in hot soup can become warm at the handle even though the handle never touches the soup. Energy is transferred through the spoon. Different materials carry this energy at different rates, which is why the material of a handle matters.

Look closer

The same principle can mislead your sense of temperature. Tile and carpet in the same room may be equally warm, yet the tile feels colder under bare feet because it draws heat from skin faster. What you feel depends on heat transfer as well as temperature. A cold-feeling surface is therefore not, by touch alone, proof that its temperature is lower than that of the surface beside it.
